Getting Out of Gangs

Leaving a gang and the gang lifestyle is difficult, but it can be done. When gang members decide that they want to get out of the gang, there are a few simple steps that they can begin to follow:

  • Spend your time doing other things. Instead of spending time with your gang friends, find something else to do. Look around, there are possibilities everywhere: sports, recreation centers, Boys & Girls Clubs, arts programs, drama, school activities, even spending time with your family.
  • Stop looking like a gangster. Many gang members “dress down” because it makes them feel safe and they think others will be scared of their appearance. If you believe in yourself, you will discover that you don’t need to intimidate others to feel good about yourself. Find your own style and identity- be your own person!
  • Stop talking like a gangster, acting like a gangster, and hanging out with gangsters. Find other things to say, other things to do, and other people to hang out with.
  • Make other plans or make an excuse. It is easier to tell gang members you can’t hang out with them if you have something else you need to do. Have a plan: know what you are going to say so you have a reason you can’t hang out with gang members. Use your parents or school as an excuse. Stop taking phone calls from your gang or have your family tell them you aren’t home.
  • Never tell gang members you want out: they may retaliate against you. Getting out of gangs isn't easy but it can be done. Don’t try to do it alone: find people, especially adults, or non-gang member friends who support and believe in you and are willing to help. Once you decide who you want to be- not a gang member- act like that person you want to become.
